Course Description
Welcome to this mini-course exploring the complex world of immune responses. In this course, we’ll discover how every cell in a multicellular organism, from the tiniest bacteria to the largest vertebrates, fends off harmful invaders like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and larger parasites. We’ll especially focus on the two layers of defense mechanisms in vertebrates – the rapid, general “innate” responses, and the precise, specialized “adaptive” responses.
The course will consist of weekly evening lectures over four weeks. The participants will be advised to read a textbook material before the lecture, to be able to fully comprehend the more advanced material in the lectures. The meetings will be online/hybrid and interactive, with active participation from the audience.
People with basic molecular biology knowledge are welcome to apply. The language of the course is English.
Instructor
Lilit Grigoryan is an Immunology PhD candidate at Stanford University. She has earned her Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Brown University in 2018. Her research is focused on understanding the immune response to vaccination in humans and animal models. Previously, Lilit has been a guest lecturer on immunity to OMICSS-22 and -23 summer school students.
Who is the Course For?
Anyone who is interested in the field of immunology and has a school textbook knowledge on molecular and cellular biology. Applicants with no background in biology may also apply given they bridge the knowledge gap through homework.
Knowledge of English is required.
Course Outline
The course will be based on the following subchapters of Chapter 24 of the “Molecular Biology of the Cell” Sixth Edition (by by Bruce Alberts, Alexander Johnson, Julian Lewis, David Morgan, Martin Raff, Keith Roberts, Peter Walter) textbook. The participants are expected to read the respective sections before each class.
- The innate immune system
- Overview of the adaptive immune system
- B cells and Immunoglobulins
- T cells and MHC proteins
